Global Climate Strike

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes participated in the Global Climate Strike on September 20th by marching around the Sunnyside neighborhood.  We received a lot of supportive smiles, thumbs up, and honks. We also had a guest speaker (Charity, Kaya's mom) talk to us about steps we can take at school and at home to reduce our energy use and combat climate change. Learning about climate change will be something with integrate throughout the year.  I am adding a few links to the blog this weekend to support the learning at home.

African Drumming

Our class started African drumming with Mr. Yingwana on Thursday.  I actually shouldn't call it drumming because it will entail so much more: singing, dancing, storytelling, and learning about South African culture.  Mr. Yingwana was born and raised in South Africa.  He was very involved in the anti-apartheid movement in the 1970s and 80s.  The kids enjoyed their first time with Mr. Yingwana by getting their first experience with polyrhythms.

Second Week!

This week, some of the students got to share their Identity Bags.  These bags contain items that help express the unique identities of each student.  As we learn more about our individual identities, we start to see commonalities that give rise to our class identity.

We also spent much of our math time doing math challenges and learning about the ways that math can change our brains.
